Our Commitment
Carolina Sanitation is committed to providing a website that's usable by as many people as possible, including people who use screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, browser zoom, or other assistive technology. We built this site's accessibility directly into the markup and styling rather than relying on an add-on widget, and we test it on an ongoing basis rather than treating it as a one-time fix.
Conformance Target
We target WCAG 2.1 Level AA (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines), the standard most commonly referenced for ADA compliance of business websites. This includes things like sufficient color contrast, a logical heading structure, keyboard-operable navigation and forms, working skip links, and properly labeled interactive elements.
What We've Done
- Every page has a working "Skip to main content" link and a proper main content landmark for screen reader and keyboard users.
- Text and interactive elements meet the required color contrast ratios against their backgrounds.
- Headings follow a logical, unskipped order (H1 → H2 → H3) so the page structure can be navigated non-visually.
- All form fields have associated labels, and required fields are enforced with accessible, native browser validation.
- The mobile navigation menu traps keyboard focus appropriately while open and returns focus correctly when closed.
- Images convey meaningful alt text; purely decorative icons and symbols are hidden from assistive technology so they don't add noise.
- The site respects your operating system's "reduce motion" setting automatically.
How We Test
We use a combination of automated and manual testing:
- Automated scanning with axe-core (the engine behind axe DevTools and Google Lighthouse), run against every page on the site — not just the homepage.
- Manual color contrast verification using the WCAG relative luminance formula, including for elements on gradient backgrounds that automated tools can't always compute on their own.
- Third-party spot checks with WAVE (Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool) as an independent second opinion.
Known Limitations
A few things are outside our direct control:
- The booking form's spam-prevention challenge (hCaptcha) is a third-party widget; its accessibility depends on settings in that provider's own dashboard.
- Embedded third-party services (Google Fonts, Cloudflare analytics) are not part of our own codebase.
